William Alan Finn (born February 28th 1952) is an American writer and composer of musicals. He is famous by his music Falsettos which won an award in 1992 from the Tony Award for Best Original Score and his award in 1992. Alongside Lapine, Finn penned a musical loosely that was inspired by his near- death experiences after brain surgery, focusing on the role that music played in his life and his recovery. The central character in the musical is a man suffering from the possibility of having an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Finn’s long-time friend, Arthur Salvadore, is played by Roger Delli-Bovi as the main character. Finn’s mother is also featured in the production. The musical A New Brain, was a hit with Malcolm Gets, Kristin Chenoweth and Chip Zien, and premiered Off-Broadway in the Lincoln Center Theater in 1998. The musical received an award in 1999, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. The UK premiere took place at The 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Finn is a member of the NYU Tisch Graduate Program in Musical Theater Writing faculty. He is the co-founder and artistic producer of the Musical Theatre Lab at the Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, established in 2006.

His long-in-development show, The Royal Family of Broadway, with a book by Richard Greenberg, was based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, which tells the story of a girl from a family of great Broadway actors who contemplates leaving show business and getting married. It has apparently been shelved, according to William Finn’s personal notes for Make Me a Song, Playbill magazine and an article from 2006.

Finn is most well-known for his contribution to what would become a trilogy of musicals that were to be performed Off-Broadway. The musicals, Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland all tell the story of the main character Marvin as well as his ex-wife Trina and his lover, Whizzer, his psychiatrist, Mendel, and his son, Jason. Falsettos are the result of the two final elements in his Marvin Trilogy (March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland) began its run in Broadway in The John Golden Theater on April 29th, 1992. It was on stage over 486 times. The show was later awarded seven nominations for the 46th Tony Awards, winning two one of them: in 1992, the Tony Award for Best Original Score and the 1992 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical which the award was shared with James Lapine.

Finn’s first show was titled Sizzle and was recorded in Williams College in the fall of 1971. Finn composed the lyrics and music, as well as his friend Charlie Rubin, wrote the libretto. Sizzle is the very first original musical to be staged at Williams College. Williams College campus since Stephen Sondheim attended the school more than 20 years prior. Sizzle was an ode to growing up show about students at college, but ended in a unique way by having the main character in the production, J. Finn had another Broadway success with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which he wrote both music and lyrics. The show won two Tony Awards in 2005-one for Best Book of a Musical, and another for the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. It ran Off-Broadway, then on Broadway in 2005 and toured the United States in 2006. The show was first workshopped and produced at Barrington Stage Company (BSC) in Pittsfield, MA, where Finn later created The Musical Theatre Lab (MTL) with BSC Artistic Director Julianne Boyd. The MTL is an annual summer lab where emerging musical theatre artists are supported and new musical works are created, fine-tuned and produced under the curatorship of Finn and Boyd.

Finn was one of a selected few composers who contributed to the song cycle Stars of David which premiered in October 2012 at the Philadelphia Theatre Company. It was based off the Abigail Pogrebin’s book Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish and starred Nancy Balbirer, Alex Brightman, Joanna Glushak, Brad Oscar and Donna Vivino.
