After two years in Chattanooga, Wade returned to VCU to fill the position of head coach that was left vacant from Shaka Smart. In his first season back at VCU, Wade guided the team to their first Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship as well as a 25-11 overall record. VCU reached the final game of the A10 conference tournament for the fourth consecutive season, but lost in the final to St. Joseph’s. The Rams were also able to participate in their sixth consecutive NCAA tournament, which is one of the only eight teams across the nation to be able to achieve this feat. VCU reached the final 32, but they lost in the final to Oklahoma 85-81. Wade placed second in the voting for the A10 coach of the year.

Will Wade began his career as the student manager of the Clemson men’s basketball team from 2002 until 2005. He was with Larry Shyatt and Oliver Purnell who offered him additional opportunities as an assistant to the graduate program (2005-06) director of basketball operations (2006-07). Tommy Amaker then brought him to the team as his first hire in the role of Harvard the men’s basketball head coach.
