Borgen was a student at Moorhead High School in Minnesota and was the school’s leader during his last year of captaincy prior to being drafted into with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League to finish the 2014-15 season.

Borgen was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, in the fourth round, which was 92nd overall. He started his college career following the season at St. Cloud State University of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference while majoring in management of sports.

2018. He was assigned to join the Sabres’ AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans on an amateur try-out agreement to play out the remainder of the campaign. He eventually made his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators on March 26, 2019.
