Freedman was the first to initiate his involvement in the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) Project and was chairman for the GMT board since the time it was first announced in 2003 to 2015. GMT has been a global collaboration of world-class universities and research institutions to construct an optical telescope of 25 meters at the Carnegie Institute of Sciences’ Las Campanas Observatory in the Chilean Andes. With a primary mirror that measures 80 feet (24 meters) in diameter The GMT is expected to become the largest ground-based telescope in the world once it’s finished. This telescope is now in the stage of construction and is expected to be fully operational in 2024 and will be able to create images that are 10 times more sharp than Hubble Space Telescope. Freedman is co-leading an international group comprised of 30 astronomers who carried on The Hubble Space Telescope Key Project which aims to determine the scale of distance that is the Universe and to determine the rate of expansion currently occurring that is also called”the” Hubble constant. This number determines the dimension of the visible universe and is essential to determine the age of the universe. Through Key Project Key Project, the team determined the distances of 24 galaxies with Cepheid variable stars and assessed the Hubble constant by using five different methods. The team of researchers, led by Freedman and Freedman, released their final results in 2001. The research provided a value that was the Hubble constant, which is accurate up to 10%, and resolved the long-running, factor-of-two dispute.

Freedman was born into a very culturally Jewish home in Toronto as being the child of a doctor and an accomplished concert pianist. Her first fascination with science was ignited by a physics class in her high school. It was a crucial high school class. This led her to University of Toronto, where she began as a biophysics studentand then an astronomy major. She earned her B.Sc. in 1979. She was in Toronto to complete her graduate studies and was awarded an Ph.D. in Astrophysics and astronomy in 1984. After joining Carnegie Observatories Carnegie Observatories located in Pasadena, California, as postdoctoral fellows in 1984, she was made an academic scientist three years later , becoming the first woman on the permanent Carnegie staff. In 2003, she was promoted in the Crawford H. Greenewalt Chair and Director of Carnegie Observatories. Her early research was primarily in the field of Cepheid Distance Scale.

She has been awarded numerous prizes for her contributions to observational cosmology. These include the Centennial Lectureship of the American Physical Society (1999), the John P. McGovern Award in Science (2000) and the Magellanic Premium Award of the American Philosophical Society (2002) and the Marc Aaronson Lectureship and prize (1994) “in recognition of a decade of fundamental contributions to the areas of the extra galactic distance scale and the stellar populations of galaxies”. In 2009, Freedman was among three co-winners of the Gruber Cosmology Prize. She was awarded her 2016 Dannie Heineman Prize in Astrophysics. The prize was awarded jointly with both the American Institute of Physics and the American Astronomical Society, “for her outstanding contributions and leadership role in using optical and infrared space- and ground-based observations of Cepheid stars, together with innovative analysis techniques, to greatly improve the accuracy of the cosmic distance scale and thereby constrain fundamental cosmological parameters.”

Asteroid 107638 Wendyfreedman, discovered by David Healy at the Junk Bond Observatory in 2001, was named in her honor. The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 6 January 2007 (M.P.C. 58597 ).
