Wayne Richards is an Australian former professional footballer who played during the 1990s. As a Country New South Wales representative forward, he played club football with Newcastle Knights (with whom he won the 1997 ARL premiership), Newcastle Knights (with whom he was awarded an award in the year 1997 for the ARL premiership) as well as The Illawarra Steelers and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Richards had a brief return as a player for South Sydney Rabbitohs after serving his suspension, but he was dismissed at the conclusion year 1999 when South Sydney was excluded from the competition. Richards was a part of Souths final game prior to the team was excluded which was a loss to 34-16 Parramatta.
In 1998, Richards was among the three players of three players from the Newcastle Knights 1997 ARL grand finalist team who were found to be positive for prohibited steroids (also Adam MacDougall, Robbie O’Davis). Richards confessed to the crime and received an extended suspension of 22 games. Richards wasn’t the only of the three players who were sacked at the hands of the football club.

Richards was the first player to make his grade appearance as a substitute member of the Newcastle Knights in 1991. He was at Newcastle Knights until the conclusion of 1994 when Richards signed with the Illawarra Steelers in search of regular first team participation. After the 1995 season, he returned to Newcastle to begin the 1996 season.
