Warren McKenzie is one of the most popular and richest Ceramist who was born on February 16, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. Warren MacKenzie (February 16, 1924 until December 31st, 2018) was an American craft pottery maker. He was born in Wilmette, Illinois the second youngest of five children, including his brothers Fred and Gordon as well as his sisters Marge (Peppy) as well as Marilyn. His high school years were attended by New Trier High School located in Winnetka, Illinois.
Warren MacKenzie’s wife of 30 year, Nancy MacKenzie, died in October 2014 aged 80. Nancy was a skilled textile artist who used found objects found in nature as well as recycling bins. Warren lived in their home in Stillwater, Minnesota, where he kept his studio until his passing on December 31, 2018. In the months from December 2006, MacKenzie also housed a showroom on his property. The showroom was run using an “honor system” whereby pots were marked with price tags and customers paid for pots by depositing their cash in an wicker basket and offering change when it was appropriate. Due to theft, and clients selling his work at an astronomical profit on the internet, MacKenzie closed his showroom and decided to sell his pottery via his Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Trax Gallery in California, Lacoste Gallery in Massachusetts as well as Lacoste Gallery in Massachusetts, and Schaller Gallery in Michigan, along with exhibitions throughout the across the country.
MacKenzie stated his aim as making “everyday” pots. Therefore, while his pots can be found in major museums and are highly sought-after by buyers, MacKenzie has always kept his prices low . He also during various times did not have his work signed (1970s as well as the bulk of the decade of 2000s) until recently when he resumed cutting of his chop towards the end of 2009. Much of his work was made of stoneware, however, he also worked with porcelain in a few instances during his career.
