A starting point in much of Sundberg’s artwork is nature. Animals and plants are present in often unexpected juxtapositions; sometimes humorously created, sometimes more thoughtfully. In his glasswork, Sundberg often uses inset images in the form of decals from the old Gustavsberg porcelain factory and with properties to withstand high temperatures. The inset images contrast with one another, creating tension in the work. Sundberg also uses decals in his ceramic art, as well as ceramic figurines from flea markets. Unexpected encounters between sculpted nature and combinations of figurines take place. In some works, both in glass and ceramics, Sundberg discusses the concept of function. Is a special function associated with a particular shape? is one of the questions he investigates. Common to Sundberg’s oeuvre is the sculptural expression, which from around 2011 has become even more articulated.

After finishing his studies, Per B. Sundberg established himself as a glass and ceramic artist. He is a prolific creator of unique art pieces or public art Since 2005, he has been working full-time at his own Studio in Gustavsberg. After his training at Konstfack with a few classmates set up a glass studio on islands Fjaderholmarna situated at the entrance towards Stockholm. In the studio, Sundberg was a glass blower among others with his coworkers Gunilla Kihlgren, and Marten Medbo. From 1994 to 2005, Per B. Sundberg was employed by Orrefors glassworks. His work in glass also garnered international attention and sales included by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. While at the Orrefors Glassworks Sundberg created new techniques for glass. Fabula is one of them. Fabula technique is an adaptation of Orrefors traditional graal technique. Decals that are heat-resistant are glued onto an oblong glass blank. The blank glass is then heated, covered with clear glass, then blow-blown into the desired shape. While still hot, the item is then shaped with metal tools. The themes of art are nature and flora, and also celebrities. The Litograal method is similar and the decals are replaced by black and white reproductions from comic books, usually of a sexual character. At times, Sundberg creates the glass’s surface transparent and polishes the windows to reveal the subject. In connection to an ownership transfer to Orrefors Kosta Boda glassworks in 2005, Orrefors Kosta Boda glassworks back in 2005 Sundberg was forced to leave Orrefors and was appointed professor in Konstfack. Konstfack Department of Design, Crafts and Arts. Parallel to his job in Konstfack, Sundberg has worked in his studio in the former location at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. When the operation ceased at the plant there were a lot of independent artists relocated to the studio which included Sundberg. A key element of Sundberg’s creative process is the use of materials left behind by other artists such as glazes, clays, figurines, and decals. These are then the basis of his creative process. Sundberg is constantly seeking new ideas and is constantly testing the limits of his materials. In his studio, he’s created new ceramic materials. These include glazes and clays that were made in the old factory. Sundberg blends the figurines he has found at flea markets, along with the self-constructed base. A variety of firings with different glazes follow. Glazes therefore form an integral part of the sculptured design.
