Wilczynski was born in Trenton, New Jersey. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and biology from Lehigh University in 1974, following which he earned the Ph.D. on neuroscience at the University of Michigan in 1978. Then, he completed his postdoc in Cornell University’s Section of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University, where he was a researcher in the laboratory that was headed by Robert Capranica.
When he graduated in 1983 Wilczynski became a faculty member at The University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor of psychology. He was as a faculty member of the University of Texas at Austin until the year 2005 when Wilczynski was appointed to the faculty of GSU. When he was at University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at Austin, he was involved in the creation of the Institute for Neuroscience and the multidisciplinary neuroscience Ph.D. program at the university. At GSU the university, he was promoted to an associate professor of psychology after being appointed to their faculty in. He has served as director of the Research and Academic Programs at GSU’s Center for Behavioral Neuroscience since 2005. He also served as the director of the GSU’s Neuroscience Institute since it was created in the year 2008. The year 2013 was the first time he was awarded an award of five years, $499,209 by the National Science Foundation to create the Sociogenomics Initiative Research Coordination Network that connects researchers from Canada, the U.S. and Canada working in the area of sociogenomics.
