Walter George Patulski (born February 3 1950) is an ex- American football defensive player who played at the University of Notre Dame and the National Football League.
Played in every game during his college career. He recorded 186 tackles and 40 losses; snatched up 10 passes; and recovered five fumbles, and returned a blocked punt for 12 miles. In his final campaign at Notre Dame 2001, Patulski was named the team’s defensive MVP. Patulski recorded 74 tackles that was 22 more than the total from the season of 1970. 17 of those tackles resulted in defeats for the team in opposition. Patulski also smashed six passes and recovered a lost fumble. The 1969-71 Irish defenses rushing and defenses in total were as the nation’s top 6 for the entire period and its scoring defense was among the top ten in both 1970 and 1971. They also had the record of 25-4-1 in those three seasons when Patulski was an active player.
The Bills considered Patulski expendable when they acquired Sherman White from the Cincinnati Bengals, who was selected second overall in the 1972 draft out of California.
Patulski was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the first overall pick of the 1972 NFL Draft. He was the last Notre Dame player to be drafted #1 overall. His size and speed were among the reasons he was highly touted: At 6’6″ and 250 pounds, he could run the 40 in 4.9 seconds.
He was awarded the game ball in recognition of performances in the Irish first game of 1971 with Northwestern and was named the lineman of the week for the national team after his performance in the North Carolina game. His performance in the game against Michigan State prompted the head coach Duffy Dougherty to hail him as Notre Notre Dame’s “finest defender”.

Patulski was an outstanding player in the Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, New York, where Patulski was a three-year letterman in basketball, football as well as track and field. In his senior year in 1967, the 6’5 fullback scored 140 points and helped lead his Brothers towards a 7-1 win. He was All-City for basketball and football. He was a High School All-American, he received more than 60 scholarship offers to play football.
Patulski was later added to Notre the Dame’s All-Century team. He was a part of The 1971 Cotton Bowl Classic and the Hula Bowl. The Hula Bowl he won the Defensive Lineman of the Game award. The summer of 1972 saw Patulski took part at his first College All-Star game, in Chicago, IL. Patulski was praised by the other squad for being “(T)he best we’ve seen for many years.” He was virtually unstoppable in the rush, he wowed the coaches by the “amazing agility and lateral mobility.”
At the University of Notre Dame, Patulski was converted into a defensive end. He was an All-American in 1971, and he won the 1971 Lombardi Award, which is given to college football’s best lineman. A Fighting Irish captain, he finished ninth in that year’s Heisman Trophy balloting. Selected the Nation’s Lineman of the Year by UPI and Gridiron Magazine in 1971. Patulski was named to Football News sophomore All-America squad in 1969 and was an honorable mention All-American in 1970.
