He was ambassador to Rwanda (2008-2011) as well as Ambassador for Djibouti 2006-2008) and the Deputy Chief of Mission as well as Charge’ d’affaires for Niger (2001-2003). He also served as the United State Department of State’s Representative to the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia from 2005-06 as well as a Political Officer in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq from 2004-05, and the Deputy Director of the Department’s Office of West African Affairs between 2003 and 2005.
Symington was officially sworn in as Ambassador of Nigeria on the 3rd of October 2016, and was in office until August 30, 2019.
