After beginning his career with the minor league side Nocerina, Torrente joined Genoa at the age of 19. He quickly became a key player for Genoa, playing fifteen consecutive seasons with Rossoblu in the Serie A and Serie B levels, and also playing in the European levels in the Osvaldo Bagnoli era in the 1990s. He was released from Genoa in the year 2000, having played over 400 games in Genoa and then joined Alessandria and ended his playing career in 2011 at 35.
Following his retirement, Torrente became a coach and then returned to Genoa as the head of his team the Allievi Nazionali (under-17 youth squad). In 2002, he was named the caretaker coach along with Rino Lavezzini, in the course of an extremely difficult season which ultimately resulted in the relegation (then removed in the wake of the Caso Catania) for the club. Then he returned to work as a youth coach for Genoa until 2009 and his coach Luigi Simoni offered him a coach’s job at the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione team Gubbio. In the two years he was there, Gubbio achieved a surprising feat of two consecutive promotions which led to them getting to Serie B in June 2011 as the league champions. In June 2011, he resigned from Gubbio to become the new the head of coaching at Bari and also at Serie B.
