Viola was born on the 26th of September 1956 in an Italian American family in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Virginia (Torre) and John A. Viola. His father, who was an Immigrant from Italy was truck driver following being a part of his time in the U.S. Army in the European theatre of WWII. Dad’s Army service had a profound impression on Viola when she was a young. After graduating at Brooklyn Technical High School, Viola went to at the United States Military Academy. While at West Point, Viola played in the team’s sprint football and was the cadet company’s commander for Company E-4 during her senior year.

Viola has been the founder of a variety of companies throughout his career. He was the founder of Pioneer Futures in 1987. established Pioneer Futures, one of the top fifty commissions on futures sellers across the US. Then, in 1988, he established The Independent Bank Group, located in Texas, a regional bank that has its shares listed as an IBTX on NASDAQ (IBTX). Viola was also among the two co-founders of EWT, LLC and Madison Tyler, LLC two companies that traded on the electric market previously located at Beverly Hills, CA and was able to utilize the technology of electronic trading for personal gain making him among the wealthiest men on the planet. The year 2008 was the time Viola established Virtu Financial that was involved in market making via electronic technology. Viola made Virtu Financial public in April 2015 and began trading as an NASDAQ traded company (VIRT).

He raised $10,000 to buy a spot on the exchange. He played a key role in the development of NYMEX and was a member of the Board of Directors being chairman of the Technology Committee, the Natural Gas Advisory Committee and the Facilities Committee. He also served as co-chairman for the Options Committee, vice chairman of NYMEX from 1993 until 1996, and chairman from March 2001 until March 2004. Before and after and following the Gulf War, Viola earned millions of dollars from betting on the price of oil.

His personality was amazing. He drew people in. He was a phenomenal speaker. Even if he didn’t know what he was talking about, he sounded like he knew what he was saying. He was an astute businessman and an extreme opportunist.”
