Lia was the first player to score his A-League strike in the draw of 1-1 against his former club, Melbourne Victory, in the 58th minute, on the 24th of November 2007 before a 21,938 large audience at the Telstra Dome. Lia did not play in the whole 2009-2008 A-League Season due to a knee injury he sustained in the pre-season which required a full reconstruction. In the A-League 2007 and 2008 A-League season, Vince Lia signed a contract with the A-League team Wellington Phoenix. On October 20, 2009 Vince Lia extended his contract with the Wellington Phoenix until the end of the 2011-2012.
In Shepparton, Lia played youth soccer throughout Victoria prior to making his senior debut at South Melbourne in the National Soccer League. He played for one season with Fawkner-Whittlesea in 2005 prior to joining Melbourne Victory in 2005 to take part in the newly-formed A-League. Lia then spent the next ten years playing for Wellington Phoenix, making over 200 appearances for the club across every competition. Lia was back in Australia in 2017 and signed for Adelaide United.
