He was a professional player during a time that was when racism was rampant throughout English football. He told about a match in Vale Park in 1976, “After about 20 minutes, the manager, then Terry Venables, told me to go and have a warm-up. I came out of the dug-out, and I started jogging around the touchline. I couldn’t believe the abuse that was coming at me… animal noises and all the names you think of calling a black person. Any name under the sun. And it frightened me a bit, so I couldn’t wait to get back in the dug-out. And I thought, ‘Well, if this is the sort of reception I’m going to get, then I don’t really want to know'”.

He signed with Luton Town in July 1984 but only made six appearances before being moved to Portsmouth just a few months later , in November 1984. There he played in 146 games and scored 25 goals. He joined Leeds United in the summer of 1988, where he played in 50 games while scoring seven goals. later moving for Stoke City in November 1989 on loan. He then joined Stoke City as a permanent player in November of 1990. The club later was a part of Exeter City in 1991 where played 33 times with four goals during the 1991-92 season. He was a part of Southern League side Waterlooville in the summer of 1992 as a co-manager with his former Palace colleague Billy Gilbert, but he quit the club and resigned from football at the conclusion of the season and left Gilbert as the sole player-manager. He was awarded the international cap for England Youth U21, B, and U21 and, despite being regularly a candidate for the top honours in senior international football however, he did not make the final England squad.

Appearing on The Danny Baker Show on BBC Radio 5 on 23 December 2017, Hilaire said that he supports West Ham United.
