Timothy Daniel McCormick (born March 10 1962) is a retired American professional basketball player from Detroit, Michigan. He is currently a preand post-game basketball analysis analyst with the Detroit Pistons.
On January 16, 1988, McCormick was dealt by the Philadelphia 76ers with Roy Hinson and an 1989 2nd-round draft selection (Stanley Brundy later was selected) for the New Jersey Nets for Ben Coleman and Mike Gminski. McCormick recorded a career-high 14.1 scores per match over the rest of the season during his tenure playing for the Nets. Although McCormick statistically fared superior when he was in New Jersey, the Nets were a rebuilding team , and recorded a disastrous 19-63 record.
On October 3, 1991 McCormick was traded by the Atlanta Hawks with a 1994 1st round draft pick (Charlie Ward was later selected) to the New York Knicks for Maurice Cheeks. McCormick played 22 games for the Knicks. The team played well and finished 51-31 for the 1991-1992 season. The New York Knicks were the best statistical team that McCormick played for. In the 1992 playoffs McCormick was finally able to get out of the first round as the Knicks defeated the Detroit Pistons in 5 games. In the second round the Knicks faced a very difficult opponent, the Chicago Bulls who were lead by the dominant Michael Jordan and were in the middle of their first 3-peat. Despite this, the Knicks played well against the Bulls and put up a strong fight. The series was close and went to 7 games, but the Bulls ultimately defeated the Knicks in game 7.
On November 2, 1988, McCormick had been traded by McCormick to the New Jersey Nets with Tony Brown, Frank Johnson and Lorenzo Romar to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Joe Barry Carroll and Lester Conner. McCormick’s output drastically declined when his stats declined from the time of the off season, however , he gave up his stats to be a part of an elite team when the Rockets completed the 1988-1989 season at 45-37 and advanced to the playoffs. The Rockets played against his former team, The Seattle SuperSonics, however the SuperSonics won and beat the Rockets in four games. In the subsequent season, the Rockets suffered a less than successful year, however they were able to make it to the playoffs with a record of 41-41. For McCormick the player, he played only 18 games and was an average season, scoring just 1.7 point per game. The Rockets did make the playoffs and faced against the powerful Los Angeles Lakers, a team that was highly disliked by other teams in the time. McCormick was chosen to McCormick by Cleveland Cavaliers with the 12th selection in the first round in the 1984 NBA Draft. But the Cavaliers traded him along with Cliff Robinson to the Washington Bullets in exchange for Melvin Turpin on the day McCormick was selected. The Bullets later traded him along together with Ricky Sobers to the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Gus Williams on the same day.
McCormick had been traded to Philadelphia 76ers with Danny Vranes in exchange for Clemon Johnson and the 1989 1st round draft selection (Shawn Kemp later picked) on September 29th in 1986. McCormick increased his scoring to 12.8 in his first year in Philadelphia. McCormick also averaged a career-high 7.5 points per game during the 1986-87 season. On November 21, 1986, McCormick scored a record-breaking 27 points in a defeat against the Detroit Pistons. McCormick would score 27 more times during his career, but did not score more than 27 points in one game. McCormick had lots of popularity during the first time in Philadelphia as the 76ers were not struggling. They were 45-37 when they finished and went on to make the playoffs however they fell early in their first round against the Milwaukee Bucks. McCormick continued to play 23 game for the 76ers the next season but was dismissed from the team at the end of the season.
On September 27, 1990 McCormick was traded by the Houston Rockets with John Lucas and a 1994 1st round draft pick (Charlie Ward was later selected) to the Atlanta Hawks for Roy Marble and Kenny Smith. McCormick played better in the 1990-1991 season compared to his previous season, however at just 28 years old he failed to return to his best level of play that was seen a few years prior. He still played a good part on the team and helped the Hawks reach the 1991 playoffs with a 43-39 record, however once again he couldn’t make it past the first round as the Hawks were defeated by the Detroit Pistons in 5 games.
