Benedict Chijioke (17 August 1972 7 May, 2020) more popularly known as his stage moniker Ty /’t aI (pronounced “ta-hee”) was a British rapper from the UK. The album he released was Awkward (2001) as well as Upwards (2004) and Closer (2006), Special Kind of Fool (2010) and A Work of Heart (2018). The album Upwards was nominated to win a Mercury Prize. Ty was a collaborator with musicians like Shortee Blitz Drew Horley, Tony Allen and The Roots Manuva as well as De La Soul.

On May 7, 2020 Chijioke passed away in the hospital at the age of 47, because of pneumonia following intense treatment of COVID-19. He was admitted to a hospital the early part of April but was removed from the intensive treatment unit on 19 April.

Benedict Chijioke was born in London to an Igbo family from Nigeria. He spent the majority of his childhood under the care of foster parents who were private in Jaywick Essex. This was revealed in a recent Channel 4 News feature by Symeon Brown “so they could focus on work and study.” In the story, he stated: “As kids we had no clue why we were here, and then my parents said ‘we’re going now, but you’re staying’,” he explained. “So we didn’t know why we were being left here. And just feeling a little bit abandoned really.”

In 1995, Ty co-founded Ghetto Grammar, which was a pioneer in hip-hop schooling across the UK. Ty’s debut album Awkward is out through his Big Dada imprint in 2001. His sophomore album called Upwards came out in 2003, and climbed to No.35 on the UK Independent chart of albums. The single from the album, “Oh U Want More? ” It climbed to No.65 on the UK Top 100. Upwards was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2004, but was beaten by Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled album. The album he released in his third”Closer” came out in 2006 and included guests from De La Soul, Speech, Bahamadia, Zion I and many more.

He quit his Big Dada label in 2007 The singer-songwriter said “there’s a time when you … acknowledge that the people either have lost faith in what you’re doing or are no longer interested in what you’re doing” and was experimenting using spoken words for a time. The band returned in 2010 with his release of the album Special Kind of Fool, made available in 2010 by Barely breaking Even. The BBC described the album as “a mixture of uncompromising rap and populist soulfulness, often playing side-by-side”. His last album, A Work of Heart was released in 2018 by the contemporary jazz label Jazz Re:freshed.
