In September of 2010, Sokhiev was named principal conductor and artistic director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO Berlin) starting in

2012. He was given the initial term of 4 years. He was promoted to principal conductor designate immediately with beginning. In January 2014 Bolshoi Theatre announced that Bolshoi Theatre named Sokhiev its new music director. He was given the initial term of four years beginning on February 1st 2014. The Bolshoi Theatre announced his appointment in October 2014. Sokhiev announced his decision to retire in his DSO Berlin post after the 2015-2016 seasonto give more time towards the Bolshoi post.

The year 2005 was the time that Sokhiev took over as the principal conductor, as well as musical advisor for the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse. He received the award “Revelation musicale de l’annee” by the French Critics Union in 2005 following an Paris concert with the Capitole de Toulouse orchestra. He was appointed in the month of September, 2008 to was appointed an orchestra’s musical director. The latest Capitole de Toulouse contract extension that was announced in December of 2019, will run until the summer of 2021.

Sokhiev began his piano studies at the age of 7. He conducted his first orchestra at age 17 after being inspired by Anatoly Brishkin who was the conductor of the Orchestra of the North Ossetia State Philharmonic Orchestra. Then he attended the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he was among the final student of Ilya Musin prior to her passing away in 1999. Sokhiev’s first performance as conductor was an opera production called La boheme in Iceland.

After the production in Iceland the Director General of Welsh National Opera (WNO) Anthony Freud named Sokhiev WNO’s music director in December 2001 starting in 2003, and for the initial term of five years. His first conductor work for WNO in the capacity of music director included the revival of Don Giovanni, Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci. His first production with WNO as WNO musical director came from the work that of Eugene Onegin. He also was the director for the Russian Series of WNO that featured works by a variety of notable Russian composers. On August 4, 2004, Sokhiev was dismissed from WNO immediately, following difficulties with the cast for the company’s brand new version in Verdi’s La Traviata. There was a decrease in morale within the WNO chorus and orchestra, and concerns about the possibility that Sokhiev was too young and unexperienced to be suited to be a suitable candidate for the position.
