Warne was raised in Norwich, Norfolk and is an avid supporter for Norwich City. He began playing non-League football at Great Yarmouth Town, before going to Diss Town, with whom He took home the FA Vase in 1994. While playing with Wroxham and then Diss Town, he began playing professionally at 23 when he was signed by Wigan Athletic, before moving to Rotherham where he played in over 250 games across all competitions. Later, he relocated into Oldham where he was the most popular player among fans during the time he was there as he helped the club get to get to the League One play offs in the 2006/2007 season. He then ended up making a free transfer to Yeovil in the Yeovil League, where he had to struggle to score goals often.
In in the heat of summer 2009 following having failed to reach an agreement on an extension with Yeovil the club, he joined his old team Rotherham United on trial and impressed during pre-season. He later signed an agreement for one year with the Millers and scored during his debut on the first day of play in the match against Accrington Stanley. On the 11th of August 2009, He scored an equalizing goal in the game as Rotherham unexpectedly beat Championship team Derby County 2-1 in the first round of the League Cup. It was made more shocking due to Derby County’s previous record. Derby was in the semi-finals of this competition earlier in the season. Derby signed a one-year agreement extension with the club in June.
On 28 November 2016, after the resignation of Kenny Jackett, Warne was appointed caretaker manager of Rotherham United. On 13 January 2017, Warne was appointed Rotherham United manager until the end of the 2016–17 season. On 5 April 2017, with Rotherham’s relegation from the Championship confirmed Warne was appointed permanent manager of the club on a one-year rolling contract.
