Poolman has been compared to Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien for his physical performance, and his ability to play as forward and defenseman. After completing his junior season playing for the Fighting Hawks, Poolman ended his college career by agreeing to a one-year entry-level contract on the 31st of March 2017. Poolman was able to make his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets on October 9 of 2017, with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The rookie scored his first NHL goal on the 23rd of December 2017 with the New York Islanders. He was assigned in The Jets American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate The Manitoba Moose, until January 24 in 2018, when he was called back to replace the injury-stricken Shawn Matthias.

Poolman was a part of his school, the University of North Dakota in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for three years and graduated with an economics degree after enrolling in classes during the summer. In his first year with the Fighting Hawks, Poolman was selected for the 2014-15 Academic All-Conference Team after earning an GPA at 3.0 or greater. The first time he scored a goal in a collegiate game on the 18th of October during a 3-1 victory against Colorado College. He finished the 2014-15 season just one goal close to tying the North Dakota single-season record for a rookie defenseman.
