Tristan Scherwey (born 7 May 1991) is an Swiss professional Ice hockey winger in the current season playing for SC Bern of the National League (NL). He was head coach of his team during this season. He took home five NL titles in the Bern team in 2010, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Bern in the years 2010 and 2013 as well as 2016, 2017 and in 2019. The Swiss Cup was also his to be won by Scherwey Swiss Cup with Bern in 2015. Scherwey also represented Switzerland in the 2018 Winter Olympics and won a silver medal at the 2018 World Championship.
On the 9th of August, 2012, Scherwey negotiated extend his contract by two years and stay in Bern. On April 5, 2013, Scherwey received a suspension for one game following a head check of Fribourg-Gotteron’s HC Benjamin Pluss. The suspension was then extended up to two games. Fribourg-Gotteron continued to appeal the decision and Scherwey eventually banned for four games.
Scherwey was invited to attend the Ottawa Senators’ main training camp in September 2019, forcing him to miss SC Bern’s first 8 games of the 2019/20 NL regular season. His contract situation with Bern prevented him from signing a deal with any other team, including an NHL team. An NHL-out clause will be available in his new contract when it kicks off in the summer of 2020.
On February 6, 2019, Scherwey agreed to a seven-year contract extension with Bern worth CHF 4.9 million through the 2026/2027 season.
Scherwey began his career for Switzerland for the men’s squad during the 2012-13 season. He scored his first goal in 2015. He was a part of Switzerland in the 2018 Winter Olympics and played in all four games. The same year, Scherwey also made his World Championship debut with the men’s squad at the 2018 IIHF World Championship in Denmark in which he scored 4 goals and four points (2 goal) over 10 matches. Switzerland came out on top, but fell against Sweden at the shootout. Scherwey was selected to Switzerland’s under-18 squad for this year’s IIHF World U18 Championships in the United States. He played in six games and scored five points (3 goals) to aid in helping Switzerland stay out of relegation. Scherwey was picked to Switzerland’s under-20 squad for in the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Canada. He played in seven games and scored three points (1 score) to aid in helping Switzerland finish 4th in the event losing into Canada at the quarterfinals. He was re-elected to the squad to play in 2011’s edition. He played in five games and did not score a point in the process. Scherwey’s professional debut was during the 2008-09 season of Young-Sprinters HC, playing 11 games in the Swiss League (SL) on loan from SC Bern’s under-20 squad. In the following season the player was a debutant as a player in the National League (NL), playing in 36 games for SC Bern and putting up six points, with three goals. On November 29, 2009, Scherwey received a suspension in two consecutive games of the SIHF for a boarding of John Gobbi of the Geneve-Servette HC who was unconscious and was taken to the Bern hospital. On the 23rd of April, 2010 Scherwey was banned for the following NL last game with Geneve-Servette HC for a boarding on Daniel Vukovic. Scherwey played his final junior game with the Bern U20 in 2011. In the same year, when he made the switch to professional football and signed a two-year deal for two years with SC Bern.
On 29 September 2014, Scherwey was signed to a five-year contract extension by Bern. On 3 January 2015, Scherwey was suspended for one game for a check to the head of Lausanne HC’s Gaetan Augsburger. The suspension was then brought up to five games by the SIHF. On 14 January 2016, Scherwey was suspended for three games for a check to the head of Genève-Servette HC’s Daniel Rubin and was also fined CHF 1,750 for the incident. On 29 March 2016, Scherwey was suspended for the first game of the NL final against HC Lugano for a check to the head of HC Davos’s Marcus Paulsson during the playoffs semi-finals. He was also fined CHF 1,450. On 5 September 2016, Scherwey was suspended for one game by the IIHF for a check to the head in a CHL game against Kosice HC. On 3 November 2016, Scherwey was fined CHF 900 for a simulation. On 24 November 2016, Scherwey was suspended for one game and fined CHF 1,910 for an Interference on EHC Kloten’s Daniele Grassi.
