He played at the representative level for Ireland and also in club teams with Oldham, St. Helens in the Championship as well as, later, Super League and Leigh as an off-side. The son of rugby league soccer player Tommy Martyn Sr, and the nephew of Leigh as well as Great Britain rugby league footballer Mick Martyn, Martyn played for St Helens from the interchange bench during the 1997 Challenge Cup Final victory over Bradford Bulls. Tommy Martyn, Jr. was a teammate with Bobbie Goulding in the half-backs to play in 1997’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley. His two tries and a try-saving ankle tap tackles of Danny Peacock helped St. Helens to win and earn Martyn the Lance Todd Trophy as man-of-the-match. Martyn was a player with St. Helens at scrum half-back in St. Helens’ 1999 Super League Grand Final victory against Bradford Bulls.
The team won at the 1999 Super League Grand Final, St. Helens contested in the 2000 World Club Challenge against National Rugby League Premiers Melbourne and Melbourne, with Martyn being a stand-off half-back in the defeat. Martyn also was a part of St. Helens at stand-off half-back in Their 2001 Super League Grand Final victory against Wigan. His talents were rewarded when he got chosen as a representative for Ireland during the 2000 Rugby League World Cup. Then, in the role of Super League V champions, St. Helens played against the 2000 NRL Premiers Brisbane during their 2000 World Club Challenge. Martyn was a half-back stand-off during St. Helens’ victory.
In December 2009 he joined Widnes in a similar role.
