Mrcela quit Australia at the age of 16 and was a part of the youth academy of Dalmatian club RNK Split. He was released from Split and joined Jadran Kastel, a third division team at the time. He later joined NK Primorac 1929 in 2010.
In mid-2011, Tomislav joined NK Imotski. Although he was just 20 years old older, Mrcela quickly became a starting player. In the course of a single game throughout the season, he made 29 appearances and scored three goals. Mrcela maintained his form throughout the following season, and was only missing one game until the beginning of January 2013. His excellent form earned him an offer to join fellow second division team NK Mosor where he played through the rest of the 2012-13 season.
On 28 June 2016, Mrcela transferred to South Korean club Jeonnam Dragons.
