Tom Stevenson (born 1951) is a British writer who has written about wine for over 30 years. According to his peers, he is one of the most prolific wine writers, Stevenson is regarded as the leading authority in the world on Champagne. Stevenson has published 23 books, the best of which were published globally by more than fifty publishers and have been translated into more than 25 languages. In 1986 the publication of his book Champagne was the first wine book to be awarded four literary awards. This established Stevenson’s credibility as a serious writer, an extremely meticulous researcher who is adept at predicting future trends and a critic shrewd enough to stand up to the established.
In 1998 the year he published the author’s Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine was the only book on wine to be recognized as a leading book in the UK National newspaper (The Guardian 14 Oct 1998) and he also published in the very first instance the 17th century document that proved that the English utilized an additional fermentation to transform still wines to sparkling wines at about six years before Dom Perignon arrived at the Abbey of Hautvillers nearly 40 years prior to that French assert that the sparkling Champagne was created.
Stevenson is also regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on Alsace wine. In 1987 he was elected a confrère oenophile of the Confrérie Saint Etienne, when he was the sole person amongst the Alsace wine producers and other experts present to identify a 50-year-old wine made from Sylvaner. In 1994 Stevenson’s 600-page The Wines of Alsace won the Veuve Clicquot Book of the Year award in the USA and caused Malcolm Gluck, then wine correspondent of The Guardian, to declare that “It is not simply the best book about Alsace wines ever written, or the most penetrating book about a French wine region ever written; it is the greatest wine book ever written, period”.
Stevenson is chairman of the Champagne as well as Alsace panels for the “Decanter World Wine Awards” since the beginning, and has been a judge at other important events in France, Germany, Greece, Australia and the USA. He hosts an annual Christie’s Champagne Masterclass in London every year (taking the event to Singapore once). He occasionally writes for wine-pages.com and also once threw away the entire issue of the Champagne & Sparkling Wine Guide due to it being delayed in its release. Stevenson’s first articles regarding wine first appeared by Decanter in the latter part of the 1970s, a magazine which he writes however, he was a much more frequent contributor for WINE Magazine for consumers and Wine & Spirit International for the trade (both have since been amalgamated in Wine & Spirit) during the 1990s and 1980s. He was well-known for his weekly “Fizz File” column in WINE Magazine, and for being the sole writer of the annual, award-winning Champagne supplement for both of the magazines.
Stevenson has also been the creator of a variety of other publications that are broad in scope which include The Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia, which is a mandatory reading requirement to pass both the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier examinations. It is being revised and published regularly since 1988. This book Stevenson demonstrated that he is gifted at taking vast amounts of experience and knowledge and transforming them into clear and sparkling prose, which is that is easy to grasp by the novice but still informative and informative for the discerning. Alongside The Oxford Companion to Wine, The Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia is considered to be one of the most important wine reference books available in English.
In addition to the books authored by Stevenson, he conceived and edited the annual Wine Report, described by Jancis Robinson, MW as “the most significant entirely new wine book to emerge in 2003”. In August 2009 it was announced by publisher Dorling Kindersley that the 2009 edition of Wine Report was to be the last, citing that the sales figures were insufficient to justify the fees of the guide’s 45 writers, among them Clive Coates, MW and Anthony Rose. Wine Report was the recipient of “Best in World” prizes three times at the Gourmand International Awards, and in 2006 it became the only wine book to be inducted into Gourmand’s Hall of Fame (a feat unmatched by other wine books until 2007 when joined by The World Atlas of Wine and Bordeaux et ses Vins).
