Sanders was a surprising inclusion of Sanders’ inclusion in the New Zealand Under-20 side which participated at the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship in the country he grew up in. Sanders began his professional career playing for Canterbury at the time of the 2014 ITM Cup, making his debut against Auckland in the first week of the tournament. Sanders was forced to settle for being on the substitutes in most of the time, but did show up with a lot of success and scored three tries in eight appearances throughout the entire season. He was involved in 10 games in 2015, alternating the starting role alongside Reed Prinsep as Canterbury lifted the Premiership title by beating Auckland 25-23. Auckland during the championship final. A knee injury held him back for the first half of 2016 but he returned to play seven times and scored one attempt to lead Canterbury to win their eighth national championship in the span of nine seasons.
