Jock Hobbs is one of the most popular and richest New Zealand rugby union player who was born on February 15, 1960 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Michael James Bowie Hobbs CNZM (15 February 1960 13 March 2012) commonly referred to as Jock Hobbs was a New Zealand rugby union player and administrator. He was a flanker for Canterbury and was awarded 21 caps in his New Zealand national team, the All Blacks, between 1983 and 1986. He also played the captain’s role for four of those tests.
In the years following, He was a prominent figure in management of the sport. From 2002 to 2010, he was the chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union before taking a break in the aftermath of a health issue.
Hobbs was the longest serving chairman in NZRU history and his service to the game was recognized at the 2011 IRB and Steinlager Rugby awards where he received the Vernon Pugh award for Distinguished service and the Steinlager Salver award respectively.
In 2010, Hobbs stepped down from his administrative positions in order to battle leukaemia. He died of the disease on 13 March 2012 at Wellington Hospital.
The year 1995 was the time that Hobbs helped in keeping New Zealand’s top players as they were close to switching to Kerry Packer’s rebel World Rugby Corporation.

Hobbs was born in Christchurch. He was a member of the first XV of Christ’s College in Christchurch, and was a frequent first selection for Canterbury during the 1981 season to the present, participating in the flimsy Ranfurly Shield challenge against Waikato. His first test appearance came in 1983, against his former team, the British as well as Irish Lions, where he was named the successor in the absence of Graham Mourie. Other potential replacements included Bruce Middleton and Auckland captain Alwyn Harvey, however Hobbs did so good in the match against Lions that he earned him the only choice to be All Blacks number seven for the following few seasons.
Hobbs was the All Black captain on the brief tour of Fiji late in 1984 , when Andy Dalton was unavailable, as well as in his tour to Argentina in 1985, Dalton was also unavailable. Hobbs was a part of his 1985 New Zealand Cavaliers tour to South Africa, before retiring in 1987 after a string of concussions.
In 2005, Hobbs led New Zealand’s successful bid to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup and in the same year was named the Herald’s New Zealander of the year. In the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to rugby and sports administration.
