With a major league managerial record between 68 and 81 (.456), Runnells then returned to minor league baseball, directing both the farms of the Detroit Tigers and the Colorado Rockies. The spring of 1995 saw Runnells supervised the Tigers as replacement players during spring training in the 1994-1995 Major League Baseball strike.

Runnells was a student at in the University of Northern Colorado and initially was signed by his former team, the San Francisco Giants. He played for a portion of 2 seasons (1985-86) in the Cincinnati Reds, appearing in 40 games and hitting .174 in 46 bats without any home runs or runs through. He was a switch hitter and was a right-handed thrower. Runnells started his managerial career at Cincinnati’s AA Eastern League affiliate, the Vermont Reds, in 1987. In 1989, the Indianapolis Indians won the American Association championship as well as”AAA Classic” “AAA Classic”, earning the team a promotion to a coaching position at the parent club, the Montreal Expos.
