Tom Martin (born May 11 1964 Victoria, British Columbia) is a Canadian former player of ice hockey. He was a fourth-round draft selection from the Winnipeg Jets, 74th overall at 1982’s NHL Entry Draft. He played in 92 National Hockey League (NHL) games for the Jets, Hartford Whalers and Minnesota North Stars in a time spent mostly with the American Hockey League (AHL). He was the winner of the Calder Cup in 1985 and was an AHL First Team AHL All-Star in 1988.

Martin is best known for his junior rights to play traded from 1983 Seattle Breakers to the Victoria Cougars in exchange for the Cougars team bus.

After two years of junior-A soccer in Kelowna, Martin was added to the Seattle Breakers’ reserve list. He opted to get an education in the University of Denver in 1982-83. Martin did announce that he was going to play as a junior player for his local team which was The Victoria Cougars, however. The Breakers wanted to sell Martin as they needed an additional team bus. In the same way, the Cougars had an additional bus they bought from the now defunct Spokane Flyers franchise, but because they couldn’t pay the tax and other fees necessary to transport the bus to Canada and it was at a storage facility at the United States. In the end, on the 19th of January in 1983 the Cougars transferred their bus with the Breakers for $35,000. Martin as well as $35,000. Martin was given the name “Bussey” for the remainder of his playing career.

He was a part of the Cougars in 1983-84 and scored 75 points in 60 games prior to turning professional. The first pick in the draft from the Winnipeg Jets finished the 1983-84 season in the American Hockey League with the Sherbrooke Jets where he played five games. Martin continued to play in the AHL throughout the following three seasons participating in 27 regular game and playoff games in the NHL in the period. Martin was awarded the Calder Cup championship in 1984-85 when he was a part of the Sherbrooke Canadiens.

He signed as a free agent with the Hartford Whalers in 1987, but spent the majority of the season in the AHL with the Binghamton Whalers where he scored 28 goals and 89 points in 71 games. He was named a First Team AHL All-Star that season. He was acquired on waivers by the Minnesota North Stars at the start of the 1988–89 NHL season, but was sent back to Hartford, also on waivers, after four games. He played 50 more NHL games for Hartford over the next two seasons. He signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings in

1990. Martin played 22 games with their AHL affiliate, the New Haven Nighthawks in 1990–91, after which he retired from professional hockey.
