Tom Christopher (born 1952) is an American artist who is known for his urban expressionist murals and paintings, mainly from New York City. Christopher started working as an artist for commercial purposes and later became a painter with galleries and exhibitions around the world.

He also has received praise for his museum exhibits which include his 1999 “New, New York Views” exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York and also was featured in the “Metropolis” exhibition at Butler Institute of American Art. It was the Butler Institute of American Art Director and Chief Curator Dr. Louis A. Zona said the following: Christopher “…has successfully bridged the gap between abstract expressionist painting and narrative painting. Christopher has become to American painting the same thing that Count Basie or Duke Ellington was in American popular music. Not entirely jazz, but definitely due in the direction of Charlie Parker and Charlie Mingus.”

In the summer of 2014, Tom Christopher and Oscar Andy Hammerstein took a studio residence in the Brill Building windows during its renovations. The art project was conducted as an installation and an inside look into the artistic process. The subject matter was Times Square and the streets of New York City.

In 2016 Tom Christopher collaborated with art students from Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño to create a 4,000 square feet (370 m) public space mural.

Christopher began to create fine art in the late 1980s by “…painting objects from the home and tools in the Brobdingnagian dimension” in addition to making cast-iron sculptures, which were featured “…in galleries in the East Village”. The works were presented within Socrates Sculpture Park Oil and Steel Gallery (L.I.C. NY 1992) as well as the “Tools as Art: The Hechinger Collection” at the National Building Museum Washington D.C. (1990s).

Christopher was born in Hollywood, California. He began his studies in the Pasadena Museum of California Art in 1974. Then he attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena to earn the Bachelor in Fine Arts in 1979 where he was taught by the renowned California artist Lorser Feitelson, and Ward Kimball. He made a living by drawing in Disney and Disney Anaheim. Christopher was raised “in the LA hot rod / skateboard culture” which affected his art. Christopher began his art career by working in commercial painting in California. His first assignment was for CBS Records. He was awarded a gold record for his poster design work. Additionally, he was a contributor to Motor Trend magazine. In 1981, he relocated into New York City, and was employed by The New York Times, People, Fortune and Wall Street Journal, as also a courtroom artist on CBS news, which covered cases as diverse as John Lennon’s shooter, and “The Diet Doc Killer” Jean Harris.

The beginning of the 1990s also marked the beginning for Tom Christopher’s iconic NYC paintings. The first gallery to showcase this style was The Saint Marks Gallery in 1990. After gaining more popularity and recognition for this type of art, he gradually changed to this style in the 1990’s, as well “Now his subject matter is largely focused on the streets of New York.”

In 2010 Christopher founded Lift Trucks Project in Croton Falls, New York. It is an alternative art space with exhibitions featuring works from FA-Q, Christo, Ottmar Hoerl, Ed Roth (“Big Daddy”), A. R. Penck, Sailor Jerry, and others.
