Buckingham began his coaching career as a professional with Oxford United at the age of 18, working with the club’s age group teams. When the season began, the 2013-14 English Football League season, Buckingham made the move as a coach to the first team under manager Chris Wilder.

In August of 2018, he was the team’s captain for an appearance at the 2017 OFC U-19 Championship, qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In the World Cup, Buckingham’s New Zealand team recorded their best ever performance at a men’s FIFA tournament, only to be eliminated to Colombia during the Round of 16 following an unpopular penalty shoot-out. The Team recorded New Zealand’s greatest victory at the FIFA tournament, beating Honduras by 5-0. It was the very first New Zealand team to win back-to-back matches at the FIFA World Cup in addition to having scored their first ever win against European opponents, defeating Norway with a score of 2-0.

He was inducted into the 2019 edition of the High Performance Sport New Zealand Coach Accelerator Programme; a three year programme aimed at developing and increasing New Zealand’s pool of world-class coaches.

On 5 October 2019, Buckingham led New Zealand to its third Olympic Games, qualifying for Tokyo 2020 by winning the OFC U-23 Championship. In doing so, the team became the most dominant men’s side to have played in an Oceania Football Confederation competition by winning all five games and finishing with a goal difference of +29. The New Zealand U23 side remain unbeaten, winning nine and drawing three of its 12 games while overall in 23 games.

Buckingham became a member of Wellington Phoenix during the 2014-15 A-League season under the direction of head manager Ernie Merrick. The first day of January, 2017 after his resignation from Merrick the club appointed him in the role of managing until close in the current season. Aged 31 He made history as the youngest manager of A-League history. He was capable of lifting the team from the bottom of the table being one position away from qualifying for the playoffs towards the conclusion year.
