Tom Blomfield is one of the most popular and richest Business Executive who was born on August 11, 1985 in Hong Kong. Thomas Benjamin Blomfield OBE (born 11 August 1985) is a British businessman.

Blomfield created the company in the UK GoCardless in the month of January, 2011. The company gained prominence after receiving a PS125,000 loan through Y Combinator. Blomfield continued to work in Silicon Valley and during his three years at the business the company raised PS35 million in investment and also hired 100 people. When GoCardless named Hiroki Takeuchi as its CEO on the 1st of December 2013, Takeuchi quit (keeping the “very small share” in the valued company of between $50-100 million) and relocated in New York to work for dating website Grouper social network as the Director of Growth. Blomfield was fired from Grouper in 2014 and the company closed in the year 2016.

In 2015 he founded challenger bank Monzo. In its first fundraising round, the company raised “£1 million in 96 seconds”. As of 2019 the company was built on the “lean start up concept”, operating with no branches and instead offering accounts online which cost the company “about £20 to £30 to provide”. In January 2020 his fellow founder, Paul Rippon, departed the company to spend time farming alpacas. In April, Blomfield announced he would forgo his salary for one year to help his company during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On his return from Grouper in New York, Blomfield joined Boden at her company Starling Bank which was at that point one of the first digital banking companies. He departed in early 2015 after reports of disagreements at Starling, telling the Financial Times that “he could not comment under the terms of his departure”.

Blomfield first had a meeting with former Allied Irish Banks and Royal Bank of Scotland banker Anne Boden around 2011, when the two talked about the possibility that digital banking could be a viable option. However, Blomfield was initially “reluctant” and “suspicious” of Boden’s bank connections.

While at Oxford at the time, he won the prize of PS1,000 in a competition for business plans and proposed the idea of an “eBay for students” in 2004. The company was named Boso.com which grew to include 50 universities in the UK and operated the business from 2004 to the year 2006. Blomfield told reporters that the business was struggling to raise capital due to the difficulties in establishing relationships with investors. Blomfield’s two partners from the business were in Silicon Valley and went on the Y Combinator programme, however Blomfield was not able to attend because of his university examinations. The company was transferred to an Canadian firm in exchange for “several million dollars” upon the company’s relaunch into Auctomatic which is a powerful selling tool that is available to eBay users.

Blomfield was then a student in Universite Pantheon-Assas (Paris II) between 2005 and 2006, returning to Oxford to pursue a master’s in Law between 2007 and the year 2008. He made the decision after a few experiences with law firms that He did not want to become a lawyer.
