The team he coaches is the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was previously an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins and former head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL). Reirden was a player with the NHL for the St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, Atlanta Thrashers as well as the Edmonton Oilers.
Reirden’s first coaching position was an assistant coach with his team, the Bowling Green Falcons during the 2007-08 season.
On June 25, 2014, it was announced that Reirden and Granato had been relieved of their duties with the Penguins. On June 25, he was hired by the Washington Capitals as an assistant coach. On June 29, 2018, Reirden became the head coach of the Capitals, replacing Barry Trotz who left the team after winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals due to a contract dispute. In his first season as head coach of the Capitals, he guided them to a 48–26–8 record and the top record in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division, but they would lose in the First Round of the playoffs to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games.
In the 2005-06 season, Reirden was a player in the DEG Metro Stars of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Germany and his final campaign as a professional was divided in between EC Graz of the Austrian Hockey League and SonderjyskE Ishockey, Denmark’s Superisligaen.

When he was a kid, Reirden played in the 1984 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as part of The Chicago Young Americans minor ice hockey team.
Reirden was selected to the New Jersey Devils in the 12th round 242nd overall of the year 1990’s NHL Entry Draft. After being selected, Reirden was enrolled at Bowling Green State University where the team played for four years. After that, he played in the ECHL and IHL for a few years before finally receiving an invitation to an NHL playing for the Edmonton Oilers for part of the 1998-99 season. After a brief time in the Oilers, Reirden signed as an unrestricted free agent to the St. Louis Blues and enjoyed his best year in NHL in the 1999-2000 season with a score of 25 points. The following season, Reirden was injured for the majority of the season, and only played 38 games for the Blues. Reirden later played in the 2001-02 season for the Atlanta Thrashers. He played his final tour within the NHL with the Phoenix Coyotes during the 2003-04 season, and played in 7 games.
On July 31, 2010 Reirden was named assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins joining fellow assistant coach Tony Granato on the bench. He replaced Mike Yeo who left the organization to become the head coach for the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL).
