Marchant played in high school hockey during his time at Williamsville East High School. He then played for two seasons playing in the NCAA with Clarkson University, from 1991-1993. He was chosen to the Rangers in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round at being ranked 164th overall. In 1993-94, his debut professional season, he played games for the Rangers as they had an AHL subsidiary in Binghamton. He was purchased by the Oilers by way of a trade with Craig MacTavish and continued play with their affiliate in Cape Breton (and in his final few season with the Oilers were able to boast of being among the very few NHL players who was coach by an ex-player who he was traded).
