Kumolo was born in Surakarta (often known as Solo) on the 1st of December 1957. He went to school during 12 years within the bigger town of Semarang and was a resident of his home in the Mlatiharjo Administrative Village (kelurahan) located on the eastern edge of Semarang. The father of his son, Bambang Soebandiono (bambang) was an officer within the Indonesian Army. The father of his son and mother Toeti Slemoon were at some time been members of the People’s Representative Council, the former serving for five years.

He ran again in 2004 and was elected to the legislature in the 2004 elections, this time as leader from the PDI-P faction until the next election in 2009. At that time, he again won his seat. He was also appointed Secretary General for PDI-P in 2010 by the party chief Megawati Soekarnoputri. Then, his faction’s speaker position was held in 2012 by Puan Maharani, and his secretary general post in 2015 was held by Hasto Kristiyanto.

Following Joko Widodo’s election victory over Prabowo Subianto in 2014, he was selected as Minister of Home Affairs in the Working Cabinet and was officially sworn in on 27 October 2014.

During the blasphemy accusations against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in 2017, Kumolo refused to suspend the Chinese Indonesian governor of Jakarta. Later in the same year, he disbanded the Indonesian branch of Hizbut Tahrir.

After graduation from high school He studied law in Diponegoro University, graduating in 1985. In the course of his studies in which he was elected the to the position of leader of KNPI’s (National Committee of Indonesian Youth) Central Java chapter. He also attended the National Defense Body until 1994.

Tjahjo Kumolo (born 1 December 1957) is an Indonesian politician, and currently appointed Minister for Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform. He previously held the position of the Minister for Home Affairs within the presidency of President Joko Widodo’s Working Cabinet from 2014 to 2019.

Before his stint with the KNPI Kumolo had previously worked as a journalist for a daily newspaper located in Central Java. Kumolo was first elected an official part of the People’s Representative Council in 1985 and was forced to relocate to Jakarta. He was initially an official of Golkar and was a member in the third and second commissions of parliament in addition to the body for interparliamentary partnerships (BKSAP). Following the demise of Suharto and the subsequent change towards PDI-P and was reelected to the parliament in 1999. In his time he was the deputy leader of his faction from 2002. He then became the secretary of the faction until 2003.

He is a longtime loyalist of former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and a senior member of her Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). He was Secretary General of PDI-P between 2010 and 2015, and was a member of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) between 1999 and 2014 during which time he was the speaker of his party’s faction until his replacement by later fellow minister Puan Maharani. During the New Order regime of former president Suharto, he served two terms in the DPR between 1987 and 1997.
