The father of the family was a doctor while her mom was a registered nurse. they were the 6th child of an entire family of ten.
Digges died April 10, 2009, in Amherst, Massachusetts. The cause of death was described as a suicide after her death by falling from the bleachers at the top in Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was buried along with their third spouse, Franklin M. Loew in the Wildwood Cemetery in Amherst.
She wrote four poetry books and two memoirs. Her first collection of poems, Vesper Sparrows, won the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Prize for Poetry. In 1997, Digges was given with the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, the most prestigious prize awarded to one poem for her book Rough Music. She also was the recipient from two Pushcart Awards. Digges translated the poetry of her fellow Cuban poet Maria Elena Cruz Varela. A collection of poetry called the Wind blows through the Doors of My Heart: Poems is published by Knopf in 2010.

Digges earned an undergraduate bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Riverside in 1976. She then earned a Master’s degree in English from University of Missouri in 1982, a Masters from University of Missouri in 1982 and her master in Fine Arts in Poetry from the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1984. Through her academic time, she taught at both the English and writing English faculties at New York University, Boston University, Columbia University, and Tufts University.
