In May 1997, Tina took part in through with the Olympic Solidarity Programme as it relocated between LaGrange towards Savannah. In Savannah she completed her studies the university and earned her degree from Armstrong Atlantic State University with BA in English Literature. There, Dieudonne Kwizera and Abdi Bile guided her to a final silver in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. The next year, 1999 was the continuation of the excellent performance Tina showed in Malaysia. After being eliminated in the opening race of the World Indoors in Japan, Tina won the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Mt San Antonio College Relays and the Oregon Track Classic and the Harry Jerome Classic. She also ran well through Eugene as well as St. Louis. But the Savannah International Training Centre closed its doors in the latter half of 1999 amid claims that the IOC did not meet its obligations to supply enough athletes with the necessary facilities to remain operating.
Tina also worked with Luiz de Oliveira in Tucson, Arizona. The Brazilian coached the 800 m stars Joaquim Cruz and Jose Luis Barbosa, as well as Osmar dos Santos and Hudson de Souza. He also coached David Krummenacker and Patrick Nduwimana. In 2002, she went to the Centro Nacional de Treinamento de Atletismo in Manaus, where she achieved her best mark of that season: 2:01.25. The rest of the season was quiet – with the exception of a few low-key meetings in Italy she did not compete in Europe. She also failed to contest the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
2005 started inauspiciously – with slow times outside 2:15.
Since in 1995 Tina received the Atlanta ’96 IOC Solidarity Programme, an initiative to enhance the Olympic training of chosen athletes from the world’s poorest countries. Tina as well as 11 other competitors, such as Tommy Asinga, Sipho Dlamini Ngozi Mwanamwambwa, Sipho Dlamini as well as Marie Womplou, trained under the direction by trainer Ron Davis while attending LaGrange College in LaGrange 70 miles to the southwest of Atlanta and where they had access to modern amenities and technology, which included a brand-new track worth $400,000. Despite acquiring an infection after the extraction of a tooth, Tina achieved the IAAF “A” standard and so met the criteria to participate at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg in Sweden, where she made it to the semi-finals. However, she was not able to reach the standard required for qualifying for the next season’s Olympic Games.

The birthplace of Tina Paulino was Inhambane, Tina Paulino is an in-law to Maria de Lurdes Mutola. She began her athletic career in 1992, at age 18, already playing on the team for national basketball. Stelio Craveirinha is the son of writer Jose Craveirinha and himself a former record-holder for the national long jump holder, was responsible for introducing her athletics. She participated in a variety of road races, however she was not able to compete in track competitions to her from Mozambique. Craveirinha did manage to persuade that the National Olympic Committee to send her to Portugal for a training camp. The results were remarkable considering the time frame in which she had been training for and she was crowned the Portuguese national title in the 800 meters in 2:03.84 more than the time Mutola who won her debut race out of Mozambique.
In 1993, following several wins at the South African circuit, Tina shocked the world of athletics with her speed of 1:56.62 during a competition that was won by her cousin Mutola who ran 1:56.56. Both runners broke Mutola’s week old African record. At the World Championship final of that year, which was held in Stuttgart she was unlucky to fall when competing to win the gold medal.
From late 2002 Tina was based in Rovereto in Italy and competed for the Italian club US Quercia Marsili. She was also coached by Margo Fund. She qualified for the 2003 World Championships thanks to the fact that Mutola, as defending champion, received automatic entry. After an impressive first-round victory, she failed to progress beyond the semi-finals. By now, Tina had established herself as a regular pacemaker in both 800 m and 1500 m races on the European circuit. In 2004, however, her regular appearances as a pacemaker meant that she had few occasions to attempt to meet the strict Olympic qualifying standards. After a promising early-season 2:00.96 in Brazil, her marks became slower and slower. Her final opportunity to reach the required two-minute mark, the Iberoamerican Games in Huelva in August, resulted in disaster – she failed to even qualify for the games final.
