An ancestor of Sheridan Montana, Swager earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Montana State University, received the Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology working with Robert H. Grubbs, and completed postdoctoral research in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Mark S. Wrighton. He started as Associate Professor of Chemistry at University of Pennsylvania in 1990 and was re-admitted in MIT at the end of 1996 to become Full Professor. Swager is most well-known for his work in developing innovative chemical sensing techniques that are based on molecular electronic principles. He developed the concepts of energy and charge transfer via nanowires and molecular structures as a means of creating enhanced signals that can be applied to chemical events. These techniques led to the explosive sensors that are sensitive that are commercialized with the brand name Fido. He showed the integration of molecular recognition in chemically-resistive sensors. He first did this with conducting polymers and later carbon nanotubes. The techniques were later developed by C2Sense.
