Arnold embarked on his 11th solo album Sonnet 155 by writing over 30 letters to Shakespearean actors, including Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Briers, Janet Suzman and Emma Thompson in the hope that they would provide further inspiration and help turn ideas into songs. The responses he received became the basis for many of Arnold’s songs. The album is a rock/classical crossover all driven by Shakespearean themes.
In 1999, he signed a contract to publish for his work with V2 Music, and also was appointed Master of Music at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre writing new music specifically for the play Peter Oswald’s “Augustine’s Oak’, which is a new poem written specifically to be performed at the Globe. In 2000, his new group Spearshaker recorded a number of tunes in Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales and then be put out on the album of Arnold’s own “En Route”. The year 2001 saw Arnold was released from V2 and signed with Universal Music Publishing. For the next two years, he composed and recorded music for the newly signed artists at Universal which included music from pop R&B garage, and hip hop.
