Till Roenneberg is one of the most popular and richest Professor who was born on May 4, 1953 in Munich, Germany. Till Roenneberg (born May 4 1953) is a professor of chronobiology at the Institute of Medical Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich, Germany. Roenneberg along in collaboration with Martha Merrow, explores the influence of light on our circadian rhythms. He focuses on factors such as chronotypes , social jetlag in connection to the health-related benefits.

Roenneberg has also completed his work on Neurospora crassa and has determined the characteristics of entrainment that mask by frequency (gene)-null the circadian oscillator. He has observed during the period of spore development (conidia bands) the phenomenon of masking. This is an unanticipated effect on your circadian entrainment caused by specific zeitgebers (such as temperature or light). Masking is a significant issue not just for the future research which will attempt to identify the affected data but also with regard to the daily entrainment.

Roenneberg published a book March 2012, titled Internal Time: Chronotypes, Social Jet Lag and the Reasons Why you’re so tired. The book clarifies the principles behind the circadian rhythms to the general public. One of the most important features of the book isthat “Early birds and night owls are born, not made.” Roenneberg sought to get rid of being labeled “lazy” that frequently get applied to those who get up early. In the publication, he sought to prove that the sleep patterns of people are a result of genetics, not due to choices. He talks about how each of us has an internal clock and living that is not in harmony with the biological clock can put people at a higher risk of health issues. Roenneberg introduces the concept “social jet lag,” claiming it’s more harmful in comparison to normal jet-lag due to the fact that social jet lag requires people to constantly be in opposition to their biological clock , which is the same light/dark cycle. In the book the author describes social jet lag in terms of “the difference between midsleep on free days and midsleep on work days.” The term “free” refers to the days with no alarm clock when one is able to wake up naturally on work days when you wake up with an alarm. Midsleep refers to the point at which a person is in the middle of their time of sleep. One of the major negative health effects of the effects of social jetlag can be obesity and Roenneberg says that for each minute of social jet lag the chance of being overweight rises by 33 percent. In reality, social jet lag is so widespread that Roenneberg states that 87 percent of the population of Central Europe suffers from social jet lag at least in part.

He is the current Vice-Chair of the Institute for Medical Psychology of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the director of the Centre for Chronobiology, the president-elect of the European Biological Rhythms Society, the president of the World Federation of Societies for Chronobiology and an active participant in the senior General Room in Brasenose College, University of Oxford. From 2005 to 2010 he was the coordinator of “EUCLOCK” and coordinator of the Daimler-Benz-Foundation network “ClockWORK”, and from 2010 to 2012 was the member at large of the Society for Research of Biological Rhythms

Questions about work day and free day sleep schedules, work details, and lifestyle provide data to aid in the understanding of the interplay of biological clocks and social influences. Such research has led Roenneberg to his theory of social jet lag. The MCTQ categorizes each participant into one of seven chronotype groups and utilizes data on participants’ midsleep phase and sleep debt to survey what “type” of sleeper each person is, such as late sleepers, slightly late sleepers, early sleepers, and others. From these data, the MCTQ offers methods to make up for sleep debt (if any), and offers suggestions on what to do to wake up earlier or sleep later.
