Thomas Gradin is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on February 18, 1956 in Sollefteå, Västernorrland, Sweden. Thomas Kjell Gradin (born February 18th 1956) is a Swedish associate head scout with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) and an ex-professional center for ice hockey. He participated in both the NHL as well as the Swedish Elite League (SEL) from 1975 until 1990.

In the wake of his debut campaign during the SEL, Gradin was selected by the Chicago Black Hawks 45th overall in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. After being transferred for the Vancouver Canucks in 1978, Gradin moved towards North America to begin his NHL career. In the span of eight seasons in Vancouver, Gradin established himself as the team’s most prolific scorer, and also played at 1982’s Stanley Cup Finals, as in 1985’s NHL All-Star Game. After a brief period as a player for Boston Bruins Boston Bruins, Gradin returned to Sweden and finished his career playing for the team he played for as a former SEL club, AIK.

In ensuing seasons, Gradin established himself as arguably the most skilled player in the franchise’s history during his era. He improved to 30 goals and 75 points in 1979–80, ranking second in team-scoring to Smyl’s 78 points. With 69 points the following season (21 goals and 48 assists), led the team in scoring for the first time. He repeated the feat in 1981–82 with 86 points, setting a single-season franchise record. The total broke the mark previously set by Smyl two years prior, though Smyl bettered Gradin’s mark with an 88-point campaign the following season.

Peter Gradin, Thomas’ younger brother, was also a star hockey player in Sweden throughout the 1980s although he was never drafted by an NHL team.

In addition to scoring 39 and 16 points over 35 games during the 1975-1976 SEL season Gradin got picked by the Chicago Black Hawks in the third round, which was the 45th overall of the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. In the end, unable to agree in Chicago, Gradin remained in Sweden for two more seasons before transferring into the NHL. After an NHL draft, the player moved to AIK to allow for studying in Stockholm. The first time he played in the team of AIK in 1976-77, he scored 16 goals in a row for the second time in a row that year. The following year was averaging 37 points along with an SEL record- breaking 22 goals.

In Solleftea, Sweden, Gradin played in the youth team of close by Langsele AIF. At the age of 14 the teen began playing men’s hockey for the Langsele Division 3 squad. In 1972-73, the team transferred to Modo. Gradin was a player for Sweden’s Division 1 league with Modo for three seasons prior to when the team was promoted into the Swedish Elite League (SEL) in 1975.

In 1985–86, Gradin was supplanted on the team’s top line by countryman Patrik Sundström. Playing on the second line, his single-season points total declined to a career-low 41 points (14 goals and 27 assists). During the off-season, Gradin became a free agent. While the Canucks acquired another centre in Barry Pederson, Gradin opted to sign with the Boston Bruins. He left the team with an all-time leading 550 points (197 goals and 353 assists) over 613 games as a Canuck. His tenure as the franchise’s scoring leader was short-lived, as longtime teammate Smyl surpassed his career mark during the ensuing season. Meanwhile, Gradin’s mark of 38 points in 38 playoff games as a Canuck stood for seven years until Trevor Linden surpassed it in 1993. His career as a Canuck (including many years as a scout with the organization in subsequent years) was distinguished several decades later when he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honour in 2011.
