Frischknecht also competes in cyclocross and has won the Amateur World Champion title, was Vice World Champion in 1997 and is a three-time Swiss Champion.
In 1996, he finished second in the International Cross-Country Mountain Bicycle Championships. However, when Chiotti from France’s Jerome Chiotti confessed having used EPO in the race he won the title and he was awarded an award from Chiotti. It was presented as a kind gesture in a non-official ceremony.

Thomas became close to Tom Ritchey, a major bicycle component manufacturer, who gave him assistance, and later was a mentor and good friend. Ritchey has been his sponsor ever since.
