Thomas Buffel (Dutch pronunciation: [‘to:maz’bof@l] born 19 February in 1981) is a Belgian professional footballer who was forward or attacking midfielder. He was a member of his Belgian football team at the international level.
In the January 2007 period for transfers, German club Hannover 96 expressed interest in him and Rangers director Walter Smith saying Buffel was at liberty to leave. The deal was not completed because Buffel could not agree on his personal conditions with the Bundesliga club. The club made public on February 9, 2007 that Buffel was scheduled to undergo surgery for knee injuries that had been lingering for a long time and would not play any role in the 2006/07 campaign. Buffel was back on the field on the 26th of December substitute in Rangers winning 3-1 against Motherwell but did not play often.
In the 2009 summer transfer window Buffel made a last-minute transfer to KRC Genk as part of a deal between Genk and Cercle Brugge with Jelle Vossen (on loan) and Hans Cornelis moving the opposite way.
In the 2010–2011 season he won the Belgian league title with Genk.
Buffel was signed by Scottish club Rangers in January 2005 on the midst of a PS2.3 million, four and a half-year contract. He made his debut during the Scottish Cup coming on as an extra player against Old Firm opponents Celtic in what would be a loss of 2-1. But the season didn’t end in a negative way for him since it was his turn to take a leading role during the Scottish League Cup Final, which saw Rangers beat Motherwell 5-1. Buffel also played in the Rangers team during the final portion of the season, where they would win their 51st league title , making it a double in his debut season with the club. Buffel recorded five goals over the course of 18 games across all matches.

Buffel was a player for in the Dutch team Feyenoord during the 1999-2000 season prior to moving to the team’s feeder club Excelsior Rotterdam from 2000 to 2002. Buffel returned to Feyenoord in 2002 for their Eredivisie season. The club’s president was reported to have a disagreement with manager Ruud Gullit the following year “after refusing to sign a new contract”.
Buffel began his career for Belgium with a win against Andorra in the month of October 2002, in what would turn out to be an 1-0 win. Since then, he has earned 35 caps and scored seven goals. Recently, he’s been absent as a member of the Belgian national team.
Buffel’s Rangers career came to an end when he joined former club Cercle Brugge on 1 July 2008.
