Raymond Deane is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on January 27, 1953 in Achill Island, Ireland. Raymond Deane, born 27 January 1953, is an Irish composer.

He was also the featured composer at the 1991 Accents Festival in Dublin (with Kurtag), and the 1999 Sligo Music Festival (with Roger Doyle). He represented Ireland at several ISCM festivals (Mexico City and Manchester, Hong Kong), as well as works performed at the festivals l’Imaginaire irlandais, Voyages, Montreal 2002, Warsaw Autumn (2004) and more than once at UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers. His Ripieno orchestra won a special award in 2000. He was also the artistic Director of the RTE Living Music Festivals in Dublin 2002 and 2004, which showcased the music of Luciano Berio as well as contemporary French music. A portrait concert featuring his chamber music was held at the Southbank Centre in London, in 2010.

Deane was awarded a Doctorate in Composition by Maynooth University in 2005. He has been a member of Aosdána, the Irish state-supported academy of creative artists, since 1986.

Deane has been active in the field of music criticism and writing essays. He has published in Irish journals like “In Dublin”, Soundpost, and “Journal of Music in Ireland”, as well as in academic books. He published Death of a Medium, a mock-Gothic novel in 1991. His autobiography also covered the years from 1987 to 2014, and was published in 2014. Deane was born in Tuam County Galway, and grew up on Achill Island County Mayo. He lived in Dublin from 1963 to 1974, where he first studied piano at the College of Music with Fionn Ol Lochlainn. He graduated from University College Dublin in 1974 and was a founding member of The Association of Young Irish Composers. This is the predecessor to today’s Association of Irish Composers. As a pianist, he won many awards. Deane was awarded a scholarship in 1974 to study at the Musikakademie Basle, Switzerland with Gerald Bennett. After a semester at Cologne with Mauricio Kagel, Deane was convinced to switch to Karlheinz Stockhausen to study. Deane left Stockhausen after six months due to Stockhausen’s inability to engage with his students. Deane continued his studies in Berlin with Isang Yun thanks to a DAAD scholarship.

Raymond Deane is “one the most important figures in contemporary Irish composition”. His work can be broken down into three phases. The first ended in 1974, before he studied abroad. The second ended in 1988. He described the latter as “a process learning, assimilating, and overcoming that assimilation”. Many works from his middle phase were consciously designed in a technical way to avoid the neo-romanticism he saw among his contemporaries. Fitzgerald says that Deane aims to create a dialectical drama while not regressing back to nineteenth-century norms. It is a heterogeneous, impure drama discourse. Zuk stated, “Even at the first hearing, it is obvious that his work is a product a highly reflective mind. His tone is for most part intensely serious, but shot through at times by an idiosyncratic humor and on other occasions, pervaded with a distinct spirit de playfulness.”
