He was appointed director of the Greece’s national team for senior men in the month of October, 2017. He was first the coach of Greece during the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers. He also was the coach for Greece during in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Following this year’s FIBA World Cup, the Hellenic Basketball Federation announced that Rick Pitino would be Greece’s head coach during the 2020 FIBA Victoria Olympic Qualifying Tournament and the 2020 Summer Olympics should Greece be able to qualify. Skourtopoulos will remain Greece’s head coach during the 2021 EuroBasket qualification tournament.
Skourtopoulos failed to lead the senior Greek national basketball team to the results at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, in China, that many analysts, and sports media had predicted. Some major US sports media criticized his use of the MVP of the 2018–19 NBA season, Giannis Antetokounmpo at the tournament.
A few teams Skourtopoulos has served as the head coach of are: Aigaleo, Peristeri, Panellinios, Ikaros Kallitheas, Panionios and Keravnos. The year 2014 was the time he was director of Rethymno. He also was his head coach at Apollon Patras. Then, in 2017, he was his head coach at GSL Faros.
