Thanasis Karagounis (Greek: Thanases Karagkounes; born on the 25th of September, 1991) is an Greek professional soccer player who is a winger or an attack midfielder with Super League 2 club Apollon Smyrnis.

He was a part of the team from Atromitos who finished runners-up at the 2011-11 Greek Cup, after losing the competition 0-3 against AEK Athens. Thanasis was only in the team for two games at the time that Atromitos made it to the finals in the tournament, one as a starter against Anagennisi Giannitsa during the fourth stage and the other as a substitute for Diagoras in the second phase of the quarterfinals. The goal he scored was his first for the club on the 3rd of May 2014, in an away defeat of 2-1 against Twente.

In April 2016, PEC Zwolle renewed Karagounis’ contract for two seasons, till the summer of 2018, despite his severe injury that kept him out of action for the whole season. There is also an option included in his contract for one more season.

In July 2015, after a very difficult year for the defender marred by injury (185 days to be exact), according to Voetbal International, Karagounis’ return was postponed when there was a setback during his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament injury. It remained a question whether there is a need for another operation. Eventually he lost the whole season and returned to the squad on 30 June 2016.

In January 2014 the Dutchman signed an 2.5-year agreement for a 2.5-year contract with PEC Zwolle for a transfer cost of EUR300.000. He made his debut for the club on January 18th, as a substitute in a 1-2 loss at home to Vitesse Arnhem. Karagounis was injured on his lip in his participation in the Dutch cup tie that was played between PEC Zwolle and NEC Nijmegen at the IJsseldelta stadium on the 26th of March 2014. The match was played in Zwolle. On November 25, 2014, Karagounis was injured once more by a cruciate ligament tear and was forced to miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season.
