On January 1, Pangai Junior signed a two-year deal for Brisbane Broncos. It was the starting point of an unlikely Tonga comeback from a deficit of 20-0 at 9 minutes into fulltime. As Tonga were able to imagine and score two more two tries to make the score 20-18 with two minutes remaining, England winger Jermaine McGillvary dropped the ball in his own area of the field. Tonga could have one more chance to win a spectacular victory, but they would ultimately end with a tear after Andrew Fifita crossed the tryline during the fulltime whistle, but the score was not checked by the video referee after the ball was kicked off his palm by England second rower Elliot Whitehead but was seen by the official Matt Cecchin as knock-on, the game ended in a thrilling manner 20-18 in Mt Smart Stadium.
