He received a scholarship from Clemson University and became a full- time player from his sophomore season. He played in the team’s win of the ACC championship. He also finished in the top ten with 1,258 yards of rushing (13th in the nation) with 10 touchdowns, six games of 100 yards rushing (including two games that surpassed 200 yards of rushing) 274 all-purpose yards within a single game (school record), 106.9 rushing yards per game over the course of a single period (school records). He was second for the ACC Player of the Year poll.
In September of 1990 the player was signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Phoenix Cardinals for depth purposes following Ron Wolfley’s removed from the team for the year. The 12th of August, 1991 his contract was sold with the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a draft pick conditional (not used).
After asking for a trade, he was sent along with Daniel Stubbs, a third (#81-Craig Veasey) and an eleventh-round (#304-Myron Jones) draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys, in exchange for a second (#47-Dennis Brown) and third-round (#68-Ron Lewis) draft choices on April 19, 1990.
On September 12, 1991, he was re-signed after starter Larry Centers was lost for the year with a broken foot. He was released on October 29.
Flagler was picked for The San Francisco 49ers in the first round (25th overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. In his three seasons, he carried 42 times, resulting in 150 yards, and had one score in addition to playing behind Roger Craig.

Robert Terrence Flagler (born September 24 1964) is an ex-professional American soccer running back who played in the National Football League for the San Francisco 49ers and Phoenix Cardinals. He played in the NCAA football tournament at Clemson University.
Flagler was a student at Fernandina Beach High School, in which the football player racked up 1,683 rushing yards on 200 carries , and 20 touchdowns. One of the most memorable game of Northeast Florida high school history in the game playing against West Nassau (October 23, 1981) He racked up 405 running yards and seven touchdowns. He also played basketball and was the top player in the district for scoring in his senior year.
A week after Flagler was acquired by the Dallas Cowboys to improve the running game, the team selected future hall of fame running back Emmitt Smith in the 1990 NFL draft. He was waived on September 2, 1990.
