Terao Tsunefumi is one of the most popular and richest Japanese sumo wrestler who was born on February 2, 1963 in Sumida, Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan. The total number of his bouts is 1795. This is third-highest in history. His overall number of makuuchi fights (1378) is fourth-highest ever. The 860 wins he has won are the highest number ever recorded; his losses of 938 were among the worst ever recorded before Kyokutenho was done with 944 losses in the year 2015. After he was forced to miss one day during the tournament in March, and the entire May 1997 tournament following the break of his big toe during the fight against Kyokushuzan the tournament ended with a total of 1359 matches without a break that was the sixth-highest ever. 1063 of them were in makuuchi, which is the fourth most ever. The 110 tournaments that he played in as sekitori (in the top two divisions) was an all-time record , until that record was violated by Kaio in the year 2010.
Terao has a long sumo pedigree. The third child of the former sekiwake Tsurugamine and is the his younger sibling Kakureizan [jaKakureizan [ja] (former juryo) and Sakahoko (former sekiwake). The paternal grandparents of his grandfather were distant cousin to Satsumanishiki (former makushita). His father was married to the adopted daughter of the former makushita Kaganishiki. She became the adopted daughter of Nishinoumi who was the 25th Yokuzana. He is the cousin to Tsurunofuji (former juryo). Terao along with his two brothers Kakureizan as well as Sakahoko together have a number of sumo records. They were the very first trio of brothers to achieve sekitori status. in September of 1986, Terao as well as Sakahoko are the only brothers who receive prizes together. In March 1989, they were among the very first trio of brothers who attain sekiwake ranks simultaneously. In November 1990 , they were as Chiyonofuji’s Ring-Entering Ceremony as dew-sweeper and sword-bearer.
Although Terao fought several tournaments at sekiwake he never came close to ōzeki, his best performance as sekiwake being 9–6. His last appearance in san’yaku was at komusubi rank in July 1994. In March 1995 he upset Takanohana for the only time as a yokozuna, earning his last special prize. In November 1999, at the age of 35, he defeated Musashimaru for his final kinboshi. He remained in makuuchi until May 2000 when he was finally demoted at age 37 after 90 consecutive top division tournaments. However, he managed to return to makuuchi for two tournaments in March and May 2001, becoming at 38 years and 24 days the oldest man post World War II to earn promotion to the top division. His last tournament was in September 2002, where he scored only five wins at the rank of jūryō 11 and faced certain demotion to the makushita division.
He was first in the second division of the juryo tournament during July of 1984. To commemorate this achievement, the name was changed to Genjiyama Rikisaburo. However, he returned to Terao Setsuo following a single event. After winning the juro championship in the month of January 1985, he entered the makuuchi top division however, he only won 6 rounds out of 15. He was relegated to the juryo division. He took the juryo division at the following tournament, and returned to makuuchi in July of 1985. In September of 1986, he scored nine wins as well as his first prize of special recognition in the form of Fighting Spirit. He was promoted to his highest ranking maegashira 1. The name was changed to Terao Tsunefumi in November of 1987 according to the advice of an expert fortune-teller. In the subsequent tournament, the month of January, 1988, Tsunefumi beat yokozuna Onokuni in order to win his first Kinboshi. He defeated Chiyonofuji during the January 1989 tournament , and was awarded his Outstanding Performance Award. The following basho took place on March 29, 1989, the player reached the san’yaku ranks titled sekiwake, after four years of the top division. He joined his brother in the sumo’s third- highest ranking.

Terao Tsunefumi (Si Wei Chang Shi born on February 2, 1963 , as Yoshifumi Fukuzono The Fu Yuan Hao Wen ) is a Japanese former sumo wrestler. His birthplace was in Tokyo and was raised within Kajiki, Aira District, Kagoshima, Japan. He was a fighter out of the Izutsu’s stable. His highest ranking he climbed was sekiwake. Despite his light weight, his long and lengthy career, which spanned 23 years between 1979 and 2002. He was also known by the name of”the “iron man” of sumo. He is currently the head coach at the Shikoroyama stable.
Despite being afflicted with a heart problem the Terao played a long and uninjured career, from his first appearance at the age of 16 in 1979 until the time of his death in 2002, aged 39. He was often referred to as the Tetsujin which translates to Iron Man, of sumo. Some of his other nicknames included “The Eternal Typhoon,” due to his long-lasting character and his tsuppari- style fighting. After being defeated by 18-year-old Takahanada in March of 1991 that he considered to be the most depressing loss of his professional career, He was determined to continue fighting the longest time possible.
He is now a toshiyori (a sumo elder) known as Shikoroyama Oyakata. In February 2004 he established Shikoroyama stable. He decided not to take any rikishi from Izutsu stable with him, recruiting all the new stable’s rikishi himself. In January 2006 Hōmashō became his first rikishi to reach sekitori status. Hōmashō retired in January 2015, but later in that same year Seirō became the second wrestler coached by Shikoroyama to reach the top division. Shikoroyama has also produced the komusubi Abi.
