Taylor Brooks Dugas (born December 15 1989) is a American professional baseball outfielder , as well as an Assistant baseball instructor in Northwestern State University. Prior to his professional career, Dugas played college baseball for the Alabama Crimson Tide, where there were numerous records for his offensive abilities. Dugas was elevated to the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees but did not play at a Major League match which made him the phantom player.
It was reported that the New York Yankees selected Dugas in the eighth selection round, with the 277th overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. Dugas signed with the Yankees and began his professional career with the Staten Island Yankees of the Class A-Short Season of the New York-Penn League. Dugas scored an .306 average in Staten Island, and was selected to the New York-Penn League All Star Game. Dugas played in 2013 as a player for the Charleston RiverDogs of the Class A South Atlantic League and the Tampa Yankees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. Between the two levels Dugas batted .285 and hit 64 walks.
Dugas split the 2015 season with Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, before being promoted to the major leagues on July 1, after an injury to Carlos Beltrán. He was optioned back to the minor leagues on July 3 without appearing in a major league game. He was designated for assignment by the Yankees on July 9. Dugas was released by the Yankees in April 2016, and has not played in professional baseball since. Dugas’ time on an MLB active roster, without ever appearing in an MLB game, makes him a “phantom ballplayer”.
Northwestern State University hired Dugas as an assistant coach for the Northwestern State Demons baseball team in August 2016.
It was reported that the Chicago Cubs selected Dugas in the eighth round of selection, the 249th overall choice from the 2010 MLB Draft. While the Cubs provided Dugas an additional $300,000 in signing bonuses, Dugas opted not to sign and instead returned back to the Crimson Tide for his senior year and for the chance to earn his degree, to win in and win with the Crimson Tide, and to record his career’s offensive records. In his senior year, Dugas led the Crimson Tide with an .343 batsman’s average. Dugas established Crimson Tide career records with 334 hits and 235 singles. He also had 18 triples. Following his senior year, Dugas was named to the All-SEC First Team and the All-Defensive team.

When he began playing baseball in the youth league at age fiveyears, Dugas became a part of the travel team that travelled to Florida as well as Texas. Dugas attended Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. While playing in the baseball squad of the school Dugas scored an .640 batsman’s average and 10 home runs during the final year of his high school. He concluded in high school with an .519 average of batting. But, he wasn’t selected for the 2009 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. While he was hoping to go to Louisiana State University (LSU) to play in the college league with LSU’s LSU Tigers baseball team, they didn’t provide him with any scholarship. They only offered the chance to play as an undrafted walk-on. He was offered a scholarship through Alabama State University. University of Alabama, which the school accepted.
While playing for an Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team, Dugas batted .352 as an undergraduate and was named to the All-American Freshmen team. In his sophomore year, Dugas had a .395 batsman’s average and led his team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with the highest .525 percent on base and 59 walks. Baseball America named him a first-team All-American and the American Baseball Coaches Association honored Dugas as a second-team All-American. Dugas was also selected as a member of the All-SEC first team. Following the season, Dugas was asked to join The United States national collegiate baseball team. In 2011 Dugas had his junior season, Dugas was selected to the All-SEC Second Team as well as the SEC’s All-Defensive team.
In 2014, Dugas began the season with the Trenton Thunder of the Class AA Eastern League. The Yankees promoted Dugas to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the Class AAA International League in June. Overall, he batted .299/.399/.390 with one home run, 40 RBIs, and 7 steals in 111 games.
