Tariku Bekele (Amharic: taariku baqala; born on 28 Februar 1987) is an Ethiopian long- distance athlete who is an expert in 5000-metre distance and has run up to 10000 meters in addition. The younger sister of Kenenisa Bekele. The fourth- fastest Ethiopian ever to cross 5000 metres and 3000 m. His indoor 3000m record time of 7:31.09 is the ninth fastest athlete of all time in the race. He was the 10,000-meter bronze medalist during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

He tried to defend his championship during the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, however, it wasn’t to be, and he ended up in fourth position after Bernard Lagat succeeded him as the champion of 3000 meters. In the debut year of the IAAF Diamond League series he scored two wins in the Prefontaine Classic and the Weltklasse Zurich meet. He ran the fastest time in the world in the 3000 m race at the 2010 Rieti IAAF Grand Prix, finishing in 7:28.70 to be .30 secs in front of Bernard Lagat (who set an American record). This year’s IAAF Continental Cup presented another chance for him as he was chosen for the team representing Africa over 3000 meters. As he had done in the indoors, he placed fourth and not able to collect medals, while Lagat was awarded the honors. Tariku ran on the streets towards the end in the season for track taking part in the 10 mile Dam tot Damloop race, however, he was unable to secure sixth place, with the timing of 46:44. He continued to race at the memorial Peppe Greco race and came in as third place, but was beaten to finish line by just a second from the reigning winner Edwin Soi.

He guaranteed his selection for the 2012 London Olympics with a 10,000 m win at the FBK Games in May 2012 and a personal best run of 27:03.24 minutes to finish second to his brother Kenenisa at the United Kingdom trials. At the Olympic 10,000 m final Tariku finished ahead of his brother to edge into the bronze medal spot and finish as Africa’s top performer in the event – it was his first major outdoor medal on the global stage. After the Olympics he competed in a number of road races. He won the Giro di Castelbuono 10K, placed third at the Great South Run and recorded a time of 62:59 minutes in his half marathon debut in Lisbon. He again closed the year with a New Year race win, this time with a personal best run of 28:29 minutes at the San Silvestre Vallecana 10K.

His first major triumph was at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, in which he was awarded the gold medal of 3000 meters. The 2006 World Junior Champion over the distance, and also took home the cross-country junior bronze medal that same year. He won a continental silver gold medal in the 2007 All-Africa Games. Tariku was within the top 8 spots of the 5000m finals at the 2009 Summer Olympics as well as at the World Championships in Athletics in 2005 and 2007.

He made his senior international debut during the 2005 World Championships in Athletics and was seventh in the 5000 mrace, only a few seconds ahead of more experienced counterpart Dejene Berhanu. He competed in the 3000 m during the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships, coming in sixth. Following his success in the field, he placed second in junior racing at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships (while Kenenisa, his brother Kenenisa was the winner of both the senior and junior races).

His season’s best run of 12:55.47 minutes came at the Herculis meeting in Monaco. He was selected as a back-up runner for the Ethiopian team at the 2011 World Championships, but did not compete. He ended the year with a win at the Saint Silvester Road Race, becoming only the second Ethiopian to win the race after Tesfaye Jifar.
