In 2013, Vernon was not able to take part for the World Cross Country Champions and his sole major competition of 2013 was the European Cross Country Championships where Vernon finished third in the men’s senior race behind Alemayehu bezabeh of Spain as well as Turk Poliat Kemboi Arkan. In 2014, Vernon did not compete in any of the major cross-country championships. Instead , he participated in the 2014 European Athletics Championships, the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships. The European Athletics Championships Vernon won two medals. He took home the silver medal for the men’s 10,000 meters and a bronze award in the men’s 5000m. Vernon took part in the 5000m race in the Commonwealth Games and finished sixth. In the first World Indoor Championship, Vernon placed 11th in the 3000 m. Vernon set a personal best time of 27:42 in the 10,000 metres in the month of May 2015 located in Palo Alto, USA. In 2015, the European Team Championships was Vernon’s only major event in 2015. Vernon took part in the 5000 meter race and finished third, just in the race, just behind Frenchman Morhad Amdouni, and Jesus Espana. In 2016, Vernon took part in his very first Summer Olympic Games. Vernon was able to compete in the 10,000 meter race in the 2016 Summer Olympics. In the race, he placed 25th of 34 runners with a time of 28,59 seconds. 19.36 seconds. After winning the half marathon Great Birmingham Run in October 2016 Vernon declared that he was hoping to include the marathon in his list of events and be able to get himself into his 2020 Summer Olympics.

In 2010, Vernon participated during his first IAAF World Cross Country Championships as well as the 2010 European Cross Country Championships finishing 44th at the World Championships and not finishing in the Europeans Championships. He qualified to and participate at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. He raced in the 10,000 meter race and came in 10th. In March of 2011, Vernon took part in the race for senior males in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and came in the 58th position. Vernon’s next major race took place at his participation in the 2011 European Cross Country Championships which he placed ninth in the race for senior males. In the year 2011 Vernon took part in the 5000 meter race during the European Team Championships. Vernon was third in the race, just in the race, behind Spain’s Jesus Espana and Serhiy Lebid from Ukraine. In 2011, there was also an event called the 2011 Summer Universiade where Vernon took home a gold medal in the 5000 meters. In 2012, Vernon was not part of the World Cross Country Championships. At his final race at the European Cross Country Championships he placed 13th with thirty minutes 33 second.

In February 2015 Vernon was involved in an argument with fellow British athlete Mo Farah on Twitter. The argument started when Vernon criticised other athletes in a race Farah was due to compete in. Farah responded by criticising Vernon and the two continued to argue for over an hour.

Vernon’s first international athletics event was his participation in the year 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships where he raced in the junior men’s 8,000-metre race. He finished 64th in 27 mins and 12 secs. Vernon’s next international race came in the year 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Championships where he was again a participant in the junior race for men which he finished 48th. In the 2005 European Athletics Junior Championships he took part in the 5000m race and finished 4th in fourteen minutes, 27 seconds. In December 2005, he earned his first international medal at the European Junior Cross Country Championships placing 2nd behind Hungary’s Barnabas Benes. Vernon then took part in the 2007 European Cross Country Championships and was 3rd in the male’s under-23 race. In 2007, at the European Athletics U23 Championships Vernon participated in the 5000m race and placed seventh in the time of 13 mins and 59.24 seconds. Vernon took part during the 2008 World University Cross Country Championships and finished sixth. In 2008, there was also in 2008 the IAAF World Cross Country Championships which Vernon was 115th overall in the 12 km older men’s race. The next big competition he competed in came in the year 2007 European Cross Country Championships where Vernon competed in the race for men under 23. He placed second behind Italian Andrea Lalli. Vernon participated for the fourth time at World Cross Country Championships in the 2009 edition. Vernon competed in the men’s senior race and placed 78th. In 2009, at the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin Vernon participated in the senior men’s race, finishing 12th.
